A few royal visits to Kalmar Castle

  • 1266: Regent Birger Jarl and Cardinal Guido, the pope´s messenger, participate in a church council in Kalmar.
  • 1276: King Magnus Ladulås marries Helvig of Holstein in Kalmar castle.
  • 1351: King Magnus Eriksson signs a loan in the chapel.
  • 1397: Queen Margret and Erik of Pomerania come to Kalmar and Erik is crowned King of the Kalmar Union.
  • 1409-09: Erik of Pomerania resides primarily in Kalmar.
  • 1444: King Kristoffer of Bavaria participates in a Union meeting in Kalmar.
  • 1474: Regent Sten Sture Sr. participates in a Union meeting in Kalmar.
  • 1520: Danish King Kristian II, resides at the castle which had been defended by Anna Bielke, widow of Captain Johan Månsson (Natt och Dag)
  • 1532: Gustav Vasa resides at the castle during the summer, together with his first queen, Katarina of Sachsen-Lauenburg.
  • 1552-53: Gustav Vasa honeymoons with his third queen, Katarina Stenbock, and his royal family. Their stay at the castle, lasting three months, is Gustav Vasa´s last.
  • 1558-60: Duke Erik (later Erik XIV)  lives at the castle.
  • 1571-72: King Johan III stays at the castle with his first queen Katarina Jagellonica, his sisters Elisabeth, Sofia and Cecilia Vasa, and his son Prince Sigismund.
  • 1585-86: Johan III resides at the castle with his children; Prince Sigismund and Princess Anna, and his second queen, Gunilla Bielke. The king´s sister Sofia Vasa and her son, as well as the queen´s sisters Elsa and Brita Bielke visit.
  • 1587-88: Johan III and Prince Sigismund reside periodically in Kalmar. They work to get Sigismund elected King of Poland and to execute the Kalmar Proposal, a plan for a union between Poland and Sweden.
  • 1620: With great festivity, Gustav II Adolf receives his queen-to-be, Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg upon her arrival in Sweden.
  • 1656: Queen Hedvig Eleonora stays at the castle for a few days.
  • 1673: While touring the country, King Karl XI stays at the castle with his mother Queen Dowager Hedvig Eleonora.
  • 1692: King Karl XI makes a short visit to Kalmar castle.
  • 1722: King Fredrik I visits Kalmar.
  • 1743: Successor to the throne , Adolf Fredrik, resides at the castle.
  • 1744: Queen-to-be Lovisa Ulrika is ceremoniously received in Kalmar.
  • 1776: King Gustav III visits the castle and inspects the distillery.
  • 1874: While in town for the dedication of the new railway between Kalmar and Emmaboda, King Oscar II and Queen Sohia give a royal dinner at the castle.
  • 1997: Carl XVI Gustav (King of Sweden), Margareta II (Queen of Denmark), Harald V (King of Norway), the presidents of Finland and Iceland and thier consorts meet at the castle to celebrate the 600-years-jubilee of the Kalmar Union.
